New York street art

I spent some time in New York in 2016 and found myself fixating on the street art scattered throughout the city. It was summer, and the streets hummed with heat and energy. David Bowie had recently died, the migrant crisis was reaching its nadir, with more migrants dying at sea trying to reach Europe that year than in any other, and Hilary Clinton and Bernie Sanders were battling it out for the leadership of the Democratic Party ahead of the US election later that year. All this, and more, was reflected in the paintings and graffiti found on New York’s buildings, bridges, pavements and building sites, offering an alternative commentary on contemporary issues.
